Embracing AI to Foster Neurodiversity and Inclusion: A Metamodern Perspective

I’ve been reflecting deeply on the potential of AI as a transformative tool to dismantle neurotypical supremacy, especially for autistic individuals who face communication challenges. In a world where the written word is often considered the primary marker of intelligence, traditional communication norms can exclude those who process and articulate their thoughts differently.

As an autistic person, I have grand ideas and continuously synthesize vast amounts of information in my mind. My cognitive process is both asynchronous and gestalt-like, but it also involves a high degree of pattern recognition and systematizing. By asynchronous, I mean that my thoughts don’t follow a linear, step-by-step progression; they come in bursts, often without a clear, sequential order. Gestalt-like thinking means I perceive and understand information holistically, seeing the entire picture at once rather than breaking it down into individual parts. This allows me to grasp complex concepts quickly and intuitively.

Additionally, my brain excels at recognizing patterns and systematizing information. I can see connections and structures that might not be immediately apparent to others, and I often develop intricate systems to organize my thoughts and ideas. This ability to see patterns and create systems helps me synthesize information from various sources, integrating it into a coherent whole. However, translating these holistic and systemic understandings into a conventional, linear format that aligns with neurotypical communication norms can be challenging.

AI has become an invaluable tool for me, helping to organize these complex and non-linear thoughts into a coherent and structured form. It serves as a bridge, translating my asynchronous, gestalt-like, and systemic ideas into generative language that neurotypical people can understand and process. In essence, AI acts as an accommodation for neurotypical individuals as much as it is a tool for me. Moreover, AI enhances my ability to conduct quicker research and integrate metamodern perspectives, allowing for the synthesis of diverse information streams and the development of nuanced, multi-layered insights.

However, my journey to embracing AI has not been without significant challenges. I have had to confront and overcome a great deal of internalized ableism, learning to accept and value the support that AI offers in my writing and communication. Additionally, I have faced ableist attitudes from others who undermine my credibility due to my use of AI. These experiences have only strengthened my resolve to advocate for the use of AI as a means to promote equity and inclusivity.

I want autistic individuals to see the immense value in using AI to amplify their voices and express their unique perspectives. AI can empower us to share our complex and innovative ideas with the world, breaking down the barriers imposed by neurotypical standards of communication. By embracing AI, we can assert our intelligence and creativity in ways that are authentic to us.

At the same time, I urge the neurotypical world to reconsider their biases and fears surrounding AI. Rather than viewing AI as a threat, recognize it as a powerful tool for inclusivity. AI can help bridge the communication gap, allowing for a richer, more diverse dialogue where all voices are heard and valued. By reducing ableism and embracing AI, we can create a society that truly values neurodiversity and fosters mutual understanding and respect.

Ensuring access to AI tools for those who face similar challenges is a crucial step towards equity. It allows everyone, regardless of their neurotype, to contribute their unique insights to our collective dialogue. By democratizing access to effective communication and research tools, we can dismantle the barriers imposed by neurotypical supremacy and foster a more inclusive and diverse society where all voices are heard and valued.

Conclusion

My journey with AI has taught me that tools designed to aid communication can be profoundly transformative. They can empower those of us who think and express ourselves differently to participate fully in societal dialogues. This metamodern perspective on inclusion embraces complexity, fosters equity, and champions the integration of diverse perspectives. By utilizing AI, we can take significant strides towards a future where neurodiversity is not just accepted but celebrated.
